They state that all care workers who handle contagious patients, including those infected by SARS and the avian flu, wear masks that meet the N95 rating under the CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. N95 masks were shown on the Oprah Winfrey show by Dr.Osterholm. He said they are the best first line of defense should a pandemic flu outbreak occur. NIOSH approved N95 masks meet or exeed the CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for flu prevention. The mask shown above is a "cup" style NIOSH-approved respirator mask. The mask is held securely to your face with two elastic straps that go behind your head, providing a comfortable fit over your nose and mouth. An adjustable nose piece and inner foam layer provide a custom seal for different facial shapes and sizes. The exhalation valve reduces heat and moisture build-up inside the mask, making it last much longer than masks without a valve. It also provides more comfortable breathing and prevents eyeglass fogging. If you plan to wear the mask for several hours, on an overseas flight, for example, this valve lets your moist breath escape from the mask, minimizing skin irritation. N95 face masks with a valve are designed to be worn for up to eight hours, depending on the environment and should be carefully thrown away (without touching the outside of the mask) immediately after using. "Health Canada" advises that this mask can be worn until it becomes wet, damaged, soiled, or breathing becomes difficult. The N95 face masks without an exhalation valve do not last as long as the masks with a valve. The reason for this is that moisture from your breath causes the inside of the mask to become wet much faster. Carefully discard the mask when it becomes wet, soiled, damaged or breathing becomes difficult. Do not touch the outside of the mask because you might contaminate your fingers. Carefully remove the mask by using only the straps, then wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Masks without an exhalation valve are recommended for short term use, such as going to the grocery store, post office, bank, etc. |
