The MSR MIOX portable water purifier occupies only 14% of the space required by a typical portable water treatment filter and is ¼ the weight. The sleek and compact design is an attractive feature for backpackers or travelers trying to minimize packing volume and weight.  The disinfectant solution does not leave an aftertaste at standard doses, unlike iodine tablets. Each dose will treat anywhere from 1/2 quart up to a gallon of water. Subsequent doses will produce up to one gallon each, making this water purifier great for large groups of people.

The purifier can be used over and over, making water treatment an inexpensive procedure after the initial purchase.  There are no filter elements to clean or replace.

This unit inactivates all viruses and bacteria in 15 minutes, Giardia in 30 minutes, and Cryptosporidia in 4 hours.

The MSR Miox purifier works best on water that isn't silty or full of debris, so it helps to have a paper coffee filter with you to filter out large particles from the untreated water before adding the MIOX solution.

One set of two lithium camera batteries will purify about 200 quarts (50 gallons) of water.  Spare camera batteries can be found at stores such as WalMart and cost about $10 a set.  Batteries can also be found online for as little as $3.50 a set ( www.surefire.com ).  Their shelf-life is 7 to 10 years.

Any kind of salt can be used in this unit, but rock salt (found in grocery stores) is preferred.  A small spoonful of salt lasts a long time.  A four pound box of rock salt costs about $1.30.
